Care Tips
-
Planting Instructions: Plant in spring or fall. Dig a hole 2× the root ball width; set the crown level to slightly above soil grade. Backfill with native soil, water to settle, and mulch 2–3 in (keep mulch off the trunk). -
Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist the first 1–2 years; water deeply when the top 1–2 in of soil is dry. Avoid soggy conditions. -
Soil Type: Well‑drained loam or sandy loam; slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0). Amend heavy clay or plant on a raised berm for drainage. -
Humidity: Average outdoor humidity; ensure airflow. Provide afternoon shade in hot, humid climates. -
Pruning Instructions: Minimal. Lightly tip‑prune after new growth hardens (late spring–early summer). Do not cut into old, leafless wood. Remove dead or crossing branches anytime. -
Winter Care: Hardy in zone 5. Water before ground freezes; maintain 2–3 in mulch. Protect young plants from drying winds with a burlap screen; gently brush off heavy snow. -
Planting Depth: Keep the top of the root ball level or slightly above finished grade; do not bury the crown/root flare. -
Fertilization: In early spring, apply a slow‑release, balanced, acid‑forming evergreen fertilizer at label rates; avoid excessive nitrogen. Refresh compost mulch annually. -
Special Care: Excellent drainage is essential to prevent Phytophthora root rot. Avoid overwatering and poorly drained sites. Monitor for spider mites/cypress aphid. In containers, use a gritty, well‑drained mix and repot every 2–3 years.
