Care Tips
-
Planting Instructions: Plant in full sun. Dig a hole 2× the width of the root ball and equal depth. Set the root flare level with the soil surface, backfill with native soil, and water to settle. Mulch 2–3 in, keeping mulch off the trunk. -
Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist the first season; once established, water deeply but infrequently—moderately drought tolerant -
Soil Type: Well-drained sandy or loamy soils are ideal; avoid waterlogged or compacted clay -
Humidity: Average garden humidity; ensure good air circulation in humid climates -
Pruning Instructions: Minimal. In late spring, pinch back new “candles” by 1/2 to control size and maintain density; avoid cutting into old wood. Remove any dead or winter-burned tips as needed. -
Winter Care: Very hardy; water well before ground freeze and mulch the root zone. In exposed, windy sites, provide a windbreak the first winter to prevent desiccation. -
Planting Depth: Keep crown/root flare at or slightly above surrounding soil; do not bury the stem -
Fertilization: Light feeder; apply a balanced, slow-release conifer fertilizer in early spring only if growth is weak. Avoid excessive nitrogen. -
Special Care: Excellent drainage is essential, especially in containers. Monitor for pine needle scale or sawfly; treat promptly if observed.
