Nandina Burgundy Wine
Evergreen shrub • Deer resistant • Container friendly
A refined heavenly bamboo renowned for deep burgundy new growth, rich wine-red winter color, and delicately textured foliage on a compact, upright frame.
Description
Nandina Burgundy Wine is a standout selection of heavenly bamboo prized for its color-changing foliage. Flushed burgundy to wine-red when young, the lacy leaves mature green through summer, then intensify to rich tones again in cool weather. Upright, multi-stemmed canes form a tidy clump that needs little shaping. Sprays of small white flowers in late spring can be followed by clusters of red berries for extra seasonal interest. Tough, adaptable, and generally ignored by deer, it brings four-season elegance to borders, foundations, and containers.

Care Tips
-
Planting InstructionsPlant in spring or fall. Dig a hole 2× the width of the rootball and equal depth. Set the crown level with the soil surface, backfill with native soil, water to settle, and mulch 2–3 in., keeping mulch a couple inches off the stems. Space 2–3 ft apart for a continuous drift.
-
Soil MoistureKeep evenly moist the first growing season to establish. Once established, drought tolerant; water deeply during extended dry spells for best foliage color and berry set.
-
Soil TypeWell-drained soils are essential. Adapts to loam, sandy, or clay soils; prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0). Avoid waterlogged conditions.
-
HumidityHandles average garden humidity and summer heat well. In very hot climates, afternoon shade and organic mulch help keep roots cool and foliage vibrant.
-
Pruning InstructionsAvoid shearing. In late winter or after flowering, thin by removing up to one-third of the oldest canes at ground level and head back any overly tall stems to a lower side shoot to maintain a natural, layered look.
-
Winter CareHardy in Zones 6–10. In Zone 6, apply 2–3 in. of mulch after the ground cools; foliage may bronze or drop in severe cold but rebounds in spring. Protect container plants from deep freezes by grouping or wrapping pots.
-
Planting DepthPlant at the same depth as in the nursery pot; do not bury stems. Keep mulch pulled back 1–2 in. from the cane bases to prevent rot.
-
FertilizationFeed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow‑release fertilizer (e.g., 10‑10‑10) per label. A top‑dress of compost can replace or supplement fertilizer. Avoid high nitrogen that promotes lanky growth.
-
Special CareBest color in full sun to light shade and with modest stress from cool nights. Remove berry clusters if you wish to prevent reseeding or protect wildlife and pets from potential toxicity.
Tip: Container-grown plants perform best in a quality potting mix with 20–30% pine bark or perlite for drainage and a pot at least 16 in. across with unobstructed drain holes.
