Care Tips
-
Planting Instructions: Plant spring or fall in a hole twice the root-ball width; set root flare at or slightly above soil level; backfill, water deeply, and mulch 2–3 in, keeping mulch off stems; space 2–3 ft apart for low hedges -
Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist but never soggy; water deeply during first 1–2 seasons, then as needed in drought -
Soil Type: Well-drained loam or clay-loam; tolerates clay with drainage; pH neutral to slightly alkaline (about 6.5–7.5) -
Humidity: Average outdoor humidity; ensure good air circulation and avoid late-day overhead watering -
Pruning Instructions: Lightly shear or hand-prune after spring flush; a second light trim mid-summer if needed; avoid hard pruning after late summer; sanitize tools between plants to prevent disease; thin lightly to admit light to the interior -
Winter Care: Water well before ground freezes; maintain 2–3 in mulch; shield from wind and afternoon sun with burlap in exposed sites; avoid salt spray; anti-desiccant optional -
Planting Depth: Keep crown at the same depth as in the pot; root flare visible; do not mound soil or mulch against stems -
Fertilization: Apply slow-release, balanced or low-n fertilizer in early spring based on a soil test; or top-dress with compost; stop fertilizing 6–8 weeks before first frost -
Special Care: Monitor for boxwood leafminer, psyllids, and mites; remove fallen leaves/debris; water at the base; clean tools (e.g., 70% alcohol) to reduce risk of boxwood blight
