Hoya Rosita

Hoya Collection

A sun-kissed wax plant hybrid with narrow, cascading leaves that blush deep burgundy in bright light and produce sweetly scented, starry blooms.

Description

Hybrid of Hoya wayetii × Hoya tsangii

Hoya Rosita is a sought-after epiphytic hybrid prized for its slender, semi‑succulent foliage and luminous sun‑stress coloration. In bright conditions, the normally olive‑green leaves flush red to burgundy, creating striking contrast on trailing vines. Mature plants produce clusters (umbels) of fuzzy, star‑shaped flowers in warm red tones with a sweet evening fragrance.

Built for life in the canopy, this Hoya prefers bright, filtered light, an airy potting mix, and modest watering. It thrives in hanging baskets or trained up a small trellis, rewarding patient growers with repeat blooms from the same flower spurs (peduncles) year after year.

Suggested Uses

Versatile and stylish indoors
Hanging baskets and macramé planters Bright east or filtered south window Trailing shelf or bookcase accent Small trellis or moss pole for display Warm, covered patio (frost‑free climates) Collector’s specimen in mixed Hoya groupings

Care Tips

Practical guidance for best results
  • Planting Instructions iconPlanting InstructionsUse a pot with drainage and an airy, epiphytic mix. Keep the crown at soil level and train vines to trail or climb. Never remove flower spurs (peduncles)—they rebloom.
  • Soil Moisture iconSoil MoistureWater thoroughly, then allow the top 30–50% of the mix to dry before watering again. Reduce frequency in winter; avoid letting the plant sit in water.
  • Soil Type iconSoil TypeFast‑draining, chunky blend: approx. 40% fine orchid bark, 30% perlite/pumice, 20% coco coir or peat, 10% horticultural charcoal; pH slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0).
  • Humidity iconHumidityPrefers 50–70% relative humidity but tolerates ~40% indoors. Ensure gentle airflow; avoid cold drafts or stagnant, overly wet conditions.
  • Pruning Instructions iconPruning InstructionsLightly tip‑prune after flowering to shape and encourage branching. Do not cut peduncles. Use sanitized shears; propagate from 2‑node cuttings with a visible node.
  • Winter Care iconWinter CareProvide brighter light, keep above 55 °F (13 °C), and water less often. Avoid repotting and protect from drafts; maintain steady temperatures for bud retention.
  • Planting Depth iconPlanting DepthSet at the same depth as in the nursery pot—cover roots only. When rooting cuttings, bury at least one node; keep leaves above the mix.
  • Fertilization iconFertilizationFeed monthly in spring–summer with a balanced, dilute fertilizer (¼–½ strength). Optionally use a low‑nitrogen bloom booster 1–2× in early summer. Flush salts every 6–8 weeks.
  • Special Care iconSpecial CareKeep slightly root‑bound to encourage flowering; avoid moving the plant once buds form. Rotate monthly for even growth; wipe leaves; monitor for mealybugs and spider mites. Brighter light intensifies red foliage.
