Plant Details
-
Botanical Name: Picea Pungens Blue- Topiary Standard Topiary -
Common Name: Picea Pungens Blue- Topiary -
Size & Growth: Slow; typically 4–8 ft tall (varies by stem height) and 2–4 ft wide at the head; easily maintained smaller with light shearing. -
Hardiness Zones: USDA 2–7 (in containers, protect—effective hardiness is 1–2 zones less). -
Foliage Type: Evergreen; stiff, sharp needles, silvery to steel-blue, year-round color. -
Bloom Time: Inconspicuous pollen cones in spring; seed cones mature late season. -
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (about 3–9 in/yr, site dependent). -
Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours); best blue color in full sun. -
Attracts Pollinators: No—wind-pollinated; provides shelter for birds/wildlife. -
Indoor Friendly: No; outdoor landscape or patio only. -
Container Friendly: Yes—large, heavy outdoor containers with excellent drainage; protect roots in winter. -
Deer Resistant: Yes, typically avoided by deer. -
Pet Warning: Generally non-toxic; sharp needles and resin may irritate mouth/skin if chewed; ingestion can cause mild GI upset. -
Fragrant: Mild resinous scent when foliage is crushed; not notably fragrant in bloom. -
Cut Flower: Not for cut flowers; boughs suitable for winter arrangements. -
Grows Well With: Dwarf conifers (Juniperus, Pinus mugo), boxwood, heaths/heathers, sedum, lavender (well-drained sites), ornamental grasses.
Care Tips
-
Planting Instructions: Site in full sun. Dig a hole 2–3× the root ball width. Set root flare at or just above soil level, remove all containers/wrap, and backfill with native soil. Water deeply and stake the standard for 1–2 seasons. Mulch 2–3 in, keeping mulch off the trunk. -
Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist but never soggy. Water weekly the first year; more during heat/drought. Becomes moderately drought tolerant once established. -
Soil Type: Well-drained loam or sandy loam; slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0). Avoid heavy clay or highly alkaline soil. -
Humidity: Tolerates low humidity; ensure good air flow. Avoid frequent late-day overhead watering to reduce needle cast risk. -
Pruning Instructions: Lightly shear after spring flush (late spring/early summer). Tip-prune new growth only; avoid cutting into old wood. Remove dead or crossing branches anytime. Maintain single leader; check ties regularly. -
Winter Care: Deeply water before ground freezes; maintain 2–3 in mulch. Shield from harsh winds with burlap if exposed. For containers, insulate the pot or move to a sheltered spot—containers reduce hardiness by 1–2 zones. -
Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the nursery pot/ball with the root flare visible; never bury the trunk. In containers, keep the root ball top about 1 in below the rim for watering space. -
Fertilization: Feed lightly in early spring with a slow-release, balanced or acid-forming conifer fertilizer. Do not fertilize after midsummer. -
Special Care: Stake and secure the standard head; loosen/replace ties annually. Rotate container plants quarterly for even sun. Monitor for spruce spider mite and Cooley spruce gall adelgid; use hard water spray or horticultural oil per label if needed.
