A compact, narrow-columnar selection of Monterey cypress with vivid chartreuse, lemon-scented evergreen foliage. Naturally dense and pyramidal, it keeps bright color year-round in full sun and excels in containers, topiary, and coastal settings.

Suggested Uses

Container accents for entries and patios, holiday tabletop tree, formal topiary, narrow hedge or vertical focal point, rock and coastal gardens, mixed borders in mild climates.

Plant Details

  • Botanical Name: Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Wilma Goldcrest’ (Lemon Cypress)
  • Common Name: Lemon Cypress; Wilma Goldcrest
  • Size & Growth: 6–10 ft tall and 2–3 ft wide in 10 years (landscape); 2–4 ft in containers; naturally narrow, pyramidal habit.
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA 8–10 (7b with protection); best where lows stay above ~10–15°F (-12 to -9°C).
  • Foliage Type: Evergreen, scale-like sprays; bright chartreuse to golden in sun; distinctly lemon-fragrant when brushed.
  • Bloom Time: Not grown for flowers; inconspicuous; may form small cones.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate (about 6–12 in/15–30 cm per year in ideal conditions).
  • Light Requirements: Full sun outdoors; indoors 4–6+ hours of direct sun or strong grow lights; afternoon shade in very hot summers to prevent scorch.
  • Attracts Pollinators: No—wind-pollinated conifer (not a pollinator plant).
  • Indoor Friendly: Yes—best in bright light with cool nights (45–65°F/7–18°C); avoid warm, dim rooms.
  • Container Friendly: Excellent—thrives in pots with sharp drainage; ideal for patios and entries.
  • Deer Resistant: Often deer resistant due to aromatic foliage.
  • Pet Warning: Not known to be highly toxic; ingestion may cause mild GI upset. Keep out of reach; sap can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Fragrant: Yes—lemon-scented foliage when touched or pruned.
  • Cut Flower: Sprigs are long-lasting for wreaths, bouquets, and seasonal arrangements.
  • Grows Well With: Lavender, Rosemary, Hebe, Santolina, Helichrysum, Festuca glauca, Heuchera, seasonal Violas/Pansies.

Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions: Plant at the same depth as in the nursery pot; tease circling roots; set the root flare slightly above grade; backfill and water deeply; mulch 2–3 in, keeping mulch off the trunk.
  • Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist but never soggy. In containers, allow the top 1–2 in to dry between waterings; reduce in winter. Avoid drought the first 1–2 years.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil; neutral to slightly acidic pH. Amend heavy clay with grit/perlite and organic matter or plant on a mound for drainage.
  • Humidity: Average outdoor humidity. Indoors, avoid hot, dry air from heaters; use a pebble tray or light misting and ensure good airflow to deter mites.
  • Pruning Instructions: Minimal pruning needed. Lightly shear to shape in late winter or after spring flush. Do not cut back into old, leafless wood.
  • Winter Care: Hardy in zones 8–10 (7b with protection). In colder regions or for potted plants, move to a bright, cool, frost-free spot before hard freezes; insulate containers and shield from drying winds.
  • Planting Depth: Keep crown/root flare just above the soil line; never bury the trunk. For pots, choose a container 2–4 in wider with drainage holes.
  • Fertilization: Apply a slow-release balanced or conifer fertilizer in early spring. For containers, feed monthly at half strength spring–summer; stop 6–8 weeks before first frost.
  • Special Care: Rotate pots monthly for even growth; pinch soft tips to encourage density; monitor for spider mites and aphids; avoid reflected heat that can scorch foliage; tolerant of coastal conditions and light salt spray.
