Description

A compact, slow-growing selection of Japanese cedar with a naturally pyramidal habit and dense, layered sprays of deep, glossy green foliage that shades to nearly black-green in cool weather. Excellent year-round structure for small gardens and conifer collections.

Suggested Uses

Statement specimen for small spaces, entryways, foundation plantings, mixed conifer borders, Asian-inspired gardens, rock gardens, and large containers for four-season interest.

Plant Details

  • Botanical Name: Cryptomeria Black Dragon
  • Common Name: Cryptomeria Black Dragon
  • Size & Growth: Slow-growing; about 3–6 in (7–15 cm) per year. Typically 6–10 ft tall x 4–6 ft wide in 10 years; can reach 12–15 ft with age.
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA 5–9
  • Foliage Type: Evergreen, awl-like needles in layered sprays; rich dark green turning nearly black-green in winter.
  • Bloom Time: Insignificant; small pollen cones in spring.
  • Growth Rate: Slow
  • Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade; provide afternoon shade in hot-summer regions to prevent scorch.
  • Attracts Pollinators: No—wind-pollinated conifer (not a pollinator resource).
  • Indoor Friendly: Not suitable as a houseplant; best outdoors year-round.
  • Container Friendly: Yes—does well for many years in a large, well-drained container.
  • Deer Resistant: Generally deer resistant (low browse preference).
  • Pet Warning: Not known to be toxic to cats or dogs; ingestion of plant material may cause mild stomach upset.
  • Fragrant: Foliage has a pleasant, resinous aroma when brushed or pruned.
  • Cut Flower: Attractive cut greens for winter arrangements and wreaths; long-lasting.
  • Grows Well With: Japanese maple, azalea/rhododendron, camellia, pieris, heuchera, dwarf pines, nandina, ferns, and hosta (in part shade).

Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions: Plant in spring or fall. Dig a hole 2–3× the width of the root ball and just as deep. Set with the root flare at or slightly above grade, backfill with native soil, water deeply, and apply a 2–3 in mulch ring (keep mulch off the trunk).
  • Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist the first 1–2 years; do not allow to sit in water. Once established, moderately drought tolerant but prefers regular moisture during dry spells.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Loam or sandy loam is ideal; amend heavy clay with organic matter and grit to improve drainage.
  • Humidity: Performs best with moderate humidity; protect from drying winds, especially in winter.
  • Pruning Instructions: Minimal pruning needed. Lightly tip-prune after spring flush to refine shape. Remove dead or crossing branches in late winter. Avoid cutting back into old, bare wood.
  • Winter Care: Mulch the root zone before hard freezes and water well going into winter. In exposed sites, provide a windbreak or burlap wrap the first couple of winters to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Planting Depth: Keep the top of the root ball level with surrounding soil; ensure the root flare is visible and never buried.
  • Fertilization: Feed in early spring with a slow-release, acid-forming conifer fertilizer per label directions. Avoid high-nitrogen applications after midsummer.
  • Special Care: Provide regular water the first two growing seasons and shelter from harsh wind. Ensure excellent drainage. For containers, use an acidic, free-draining mix, elevate the pot for runoff, and repot every 2–3 years.
