Fern- Asparagus Plumosis Climbing Asparagus Fern
A refined, lacy “fern” with a graceful climbing habit. Not a true fern, but an asparagus (commonly sold as Asparagus plumosus; botanically Asparagus setaceus). Excellent for bright interiors, trellised containers, and florist greenery.
Bright, indirect light
USDA 9–11
Indoor & container friendly
Toxic to pets
Description
Asparagus Plumosis is a delicate, climbing asparagus with ultra-fine, feathery cladodes that read as “fern-like” foliage. When provided a trellis or moss pole, it forms airy green curtains that soften spaces and add texture. Mature plants may produce tiny, sweetly scented white flowers, followed by small berries (toxic if ingested). Indoors it stays manageable; in frost-free climates it can become quite vigorous, so grow in containers where spread is a concern.

Care Tips
-
Planting InstructionsUse a pot with drainage; gently loosen the rootball and set at the same level as in the nursery pot. Provide a trellis or moss pole and softly tie stems to train upward.
-
Soil MoistureKeep evenly moist—allow the top 1 inch of mix to dry between waterings. Never let sit in water; reduce watering in winter.
-
Soil TypeLight, well-draining mix: 50% peat/coco coir, 25% perlite, 25% fine bark; pH slightly acidic to neutral (≈5.5–6.5).
-
HumidityPrefers 40–60%+; benefits from pebble trays or a humidifier. Avoid hot, dry drafts from heaters or vents.
-
Pruning InstructionsCut yellowed or leggy stems back to the base. Pinch growing tips to encourage branching; routinely tie new growth to its support.
-
Winter CareKeep above 50–55°F (10–13°C); give the brightest possible light; water less but don’t allow to fully dry. Move containers indoors before cold snaps.
-
Planting DepthSet the crown level with the soil surface; do not bury stems. In containers, leave 1–2 inches of headspace for watering.
-
FertilizationFeed every 4–6 weeks in spring–summer with a balanced, dilute liquid fertilizer (¼–½ strength) or apply a slow‑release formula; hold fertilizer in fall–winter.
-
Special CareSupport climbing stems; repot every 1–2 years in spring. Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Wear gloves if handling older stems. In warm climates, contain in pots and remove berries to prevent self‑seeding.
