Description

A compact, slow-growing selection of Hinoki cypress with dense, conical form and flattened, shell-like sprays. New growth emerges bright golden-yellow, maturing to rich green inside the plant, creating luminous depth and year-round evergreen structure.

Suggested Uses

Perfect for foundation plantings, rock and gravel gardens, mixed borders, Asian-inspired designs, small-space specimens, and large containers on patios or entryways.

Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions: Plant in spring or fall. Dig a hole 2–3× the width of the root ball and equal depth. Loosen circling roots, set with the root flare at or just above grade, backfill with native soil, water deeply, and mulch 2–3 in (keep mulch off the trunk).
  • Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply weekly the first season; reduce to as-needed once established. Avoid soggy winter soils.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Amend heavy clay with compost and grit or plant on a slight mound/raised bed for drainage.
  • Humidity: Average outdoor humidity is fine. Provide wind protection in exposed, drying sites to prevent winter burn.
  • Pruning Instructions: Minimal. Light tip-prune in late winter or early spring to shape. Do not cut back into old, leafless wood. Remove dead or crossing interior twigs as needed.
  • Winter Care: Mulch 2–3 in before freeze; water well before ground freezes. In Zone 5 or windy sites, use a burlap screen for winter sun/wind. Avoid road salt exposure.
  • Planting Depth: Keep the top of the root ball level with or 1 in above surrounding soil; ensure the root flare remains visible.
  • Fertilization: In early spring, apply a slow-release, acid-forming evergreen fertilizer per label rates. Do not fertilize late in the season.
  • Special Care: Best color with morning sun; provide afternoon shade in hot summers to prevent scorch. Monitor for spider mites in hot, dry weather—rinse foliage periodically and maintain even moisture. For containers, use a sharp-draining mix and repot every 2–3 years.
