Frosty Fern
Despite the name, “Frosty Fern” is not a true fern but a charming spikemoss (Selaginella) known for its soft, fern-like foliage tipped in creamy white, especially pronounced in cooler seasons.
Description
Frosty Fern (Selaginella kraussiana, cultivar ‘Frosty’/‘Variegata’) forms a dense, low cushion of delicate, feathery fronds. The new growth blushes creamy white at the tips, giving a “frosted” appearance that contrasts beautifully with the lush green interior. It thrives in consistent moisture, bright to medium indirect light, and high humidity—conditions that make it exceptional in terrariums, dish gardens, and bright bathrooms. Kept evenly moist and out of direct sun, it grows into a compact, textured mat that brings a cool, woodland feel to indoor spaces.

Care Tips
-
Planting InstructionsPlant at the same depth as in the nursery pot. Use a shallow container with drainage. In terrariums, provide a breathable layer (LECA or fine gravel) beneath a moisture-retentive substrate.
-
Soil MoistureKeep evenly moist at all times; never allow to fully dry. Water when the top 0.5 in (1–1.5 cm) is just barely dry. Avoid waterlogging—empty saucers after watering.
-
Soil TypeRich, airy, moisture-retentive mix: 50% peat or coco coir, 30–40% fine bark/perlite, 10–20% compost. Slightly acidic pH 5.5–6.5 is ideal.
-
HumidityHigh humidity (60–80%). Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or enclosed terrarium. Avoid dry, heated airflow and drafts.
-
Pruning InstructionsPinch soft tips to encourage a fuller mat. Remove any browned stems. Sterilize shears before trimming to prevent disease spread.
-
Winter CareProtect from cold; keep 60–75°F (16–24°C). Provide brighter indirect light during short days. Reduce fertilization and avoid cold windowsills.
-
Planting DepthSet the crown level with the substrate; do not bury stems. Leave room at the rim for even watering and airflow over the mat.
-
FertilizationLight feeder: apply a balanced, half-strength liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks in spring–summer. Flush the pot periodically to prevent salt build-up; hold fertilizer in winter.
-
Special CareUse distilled or rainwater if tap water is hard. Avoid letting the plant dry out. Watch for fungus gnats (from overly wet media) and mealybugs; improve airflow and adjust watering if issues arise.
Note: “Frosty Fern” is a Selaginella (spikemoss), not a true fern. Its pale, frosted tips are most pronounced in cooler conditions with bright, indirect light and steady humidity.
