Sempervivum — Chick Charms Gold Crown

Hardy succulent • Rock garden star

A luminous hens-and-chicks with gold to chartreuse rosettes that blush peachy rose in cool weather. Tough, drought-smart, and charmingly colony-forming.

USDA Zones 3–9 Full Sun • Bright Light Deer Resistant Great in Containers Low Water

Description

Chick Charms Gold Crown is a standout sempervivum prized for its vibrant, golden-lime rosettes that intensify with cool spring and autumn temperatures, often blushing with peach and rose tones at the tips. Each “hen” slowly forms offsets (“chicks”) to create a tight, textural mat that’s perfect for rock crevices, troughs, and modern succulent bowls.

Like all hens-and-chicks, Gold Crown is fully hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and thrives on neglect provided drainage is sharp. Rosettes are monocarpic—after blooming with starry pink flowers in summer, the flowering rosette will fade, leaving offsets to carry the clump forward.

Care Tips

  • Planting iconPlanting InstructionsPlant with the base of the rosette at the soil surface; never bury the crown. Space 6–8 in apart. Provide fast drainage and a mineral mulch (grit or small gravel).
  • Soil moisture iconSoil MoistureWater deeply, then allow soil to fully dry. Drought-tolerant once established; avoid prolonged wetness, especially in cold weather.
  • Soil type iconSoil TypeGritty, sharply drained mix: 50–70% mineral content (pumice, perlite, coarse sand, small gravel) blended with lean potting soil.
  • Humidity iconHumidityPrefers low humidity and good airflow; avoid crowded, stagnant indoor environments.
  • Pruning iconPruning InstructionsGently remove dried lower leaves and spent bloom stalks. After flowering, remove the mother rosette and re-set offsets to refresh the clump.
  • Winter care iconWinter CareFully hardy; keep the crown dry and well-drained. For containers, elevate pots and remove saucers to prevent winter waterlogging.
  • Planting depth iconPlanting DepthSet so the base of the rosette sits just above the soil; cover roots entirely but leave leaves exposed.
  • Fertilization iconFertilizationFeed sparingly, if at all. A light spring dose of low‑nitrogen fertilizer at 1/4 strength is sufficient. Excess nutrients reduce color and hardiness.
  • Special care iconSpecial CareTop-dress with grit to keep leaves clean; rotate containers for even sun color. Watch for overwatering and vine weevil; remove crowded offsets to maintain form.
Watering rule of thumb: When in doubt, don’t. Let soil dry completely between waterings—especially in cool seasons.
