Cactus - Grafted Assorted Colors

Low Water Indoor Friendly USDA 10–11

Vivid, candy-colored “moon cacti” grafted onto hardy green rootstocks create a living pop of color for desks, windowsills, and modern succulent bowls. These easy-care, sculptural plants are selected in assorted neon hues (reds, oranges, yellows, pinks) and thrive in bright light with minimal watering. A great choice for beginners and collectors alike.

Description

Grafted cacti pair a colorful Gymnocalycium scion (often lacking chlorophyll, hence the vivid colors) with a vigorous green rootstock such as Hylocereus. The rootstock provides energy for the scion, while the scion delivers striking color and compact form. Plants typically remain small, making them perfect for containers and indoor displays. Flowers are uncommon indoors, but when present, they appear in warm months and can be nocturnal.

Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions iconPlanting InstructionsChoose a pot with drainage 1–2 in wider than the root ball. Set the plant so the graft junction (where scion meets rootstock) remains well above the soil line. Backfill with cactus mix and allow 3–5 days before first watering after repotting.
  • Soil Moisture iconSoil MoistureWater thoroughly, then allow soil to dry 75–100% before watering again. In winter, water sparingly—just enough to prevent shriveling.
  • Soil Type iconSoil TypeFast-draining cactus/succulent mix amended with mineral grit (50–70% pumice, perlite, or coarse sand) to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity iconHumidityPrefers low humidity (10–40%). Ensure good air circulation; avoid placing near humidifiers or steamy kitchens/baths.
  • Pruning Instructions iconPruning InstructionsRemove any offsets or shoots that form below the scion on the rootstock to preserve the graft’s shape. Use sterile tools and allow cuts to callus.
  • Winter Care iconWinter CareProvide the brightest possible light. Keep above 50°F (10°C). Water lightly once every 4–6 weeks, depending on indoor dryness and temperature.
  • Planting Depth iconPlanting DepthPlant at the same depth as the nursery pot. Keep the graft union prominently above soil level to reduce rot risk.
  • Fertilization iconFertilizationFeed lightly during spring–summer with a cactus fertilizer at 1/4 strength every 6–8 weeks. Do not fertilize in fall/winter.
  • Special Care iconSpecial CareRotate monthly for even color. Acclimate gradually to stronger light to prevent scion sunburn. Monitor for mealybugs/scale. As rootstock ages, re-grafting may be needed to extend plant life.
