Sempervivum — Chick Charms Gold Nugget

A brilliantly color-shifting hardy hen-and-chicks with glowing gold, amber, and pink rosettes in cool seasons.

Best color in full sun USDA Zones 3–9 Drought tolerant once established

Description

Sempervivum ‘Chick Charms Gold Nugget’ is a standout, cold-hardy succulent prized for its tight, symmetrical rosettes that blaze gold to apricot with vivid pink edges in cool weather, softening to fresh green in summer heat. Like all hens-and-chicks, the mother rosette (“hen”) produces offsets (“chicks”) that quickly knit into a cheerful, low mat—perfect for troughs, rock gardens, and sunny borders. Each mature rosette is monocarpic and may send up a short bloom stalk with starry pink flowers in summer; nearby offsets fill the gap, keeping the planting full.

Suggested Uses

- Rock gardens, crevice and gravel gardens where drainage is excellent
- Containers, alpine troughs, and rooftop planters; combines well with other hardy succulents
- Edging along sunny paths, between stepping stones, or in retaining wall pockets
- Low-maintenance xeriscapes and drought-tolerant plantings
- Seasonal color accents; outstanding cool-season foliage display

Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions iconPlanting InstructionsSite in full sun with excellent drainage. Space 6–10 in apart. Set rosettes so the crown sits just above the soil surface; do not bury the center. In containers, use a pot with a large drainage hole.
  • Soil Moisture iconSoil MoistureWater deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry between waterings. Drought tolerant once established; avoid constant winter wet.
  • Soil Type iconSoil TypeGritty, well-drained soil: sandy loam amended with 30–50% mineral grit (pumice, crushed granite, coarse sand). pH neutral to slightly alkaline preferred.
  • Humidity iconHumidityThrives in low humidity with good air circulation; avoid cramped, overly damp locations.
  • Pruning Instructions iconPruning InstructionsRemove dried basal leaves and spent bloom stalks at the base. After flowering, the mother rosette will fade—gently detach and allow offsets to fill in.
  • Winter Care iconWinter CareFully hardy in-ground with drainage. For containers in wet/cold regions, keep soil barely moist and protect from persistent winter rain/snow to prevent rot (e.g., move under eaves or provide a rain shield).
  • Planting Depth iconPlanting DepthShallow—set so leaf bases sit on top of the soil and the crown is never buried. Backfill with gritty mix around roots.
  • Fertilization iconFertilizationMinimal feeding. Apply a very light dose of low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer in spring, or none if soil is refreshed annually.
  • Special Care iconSpecial CareColor intensifies in cool temps and strong light. In hot summers, offer afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch. Propagate easily by separating offsets in spring or early fall.
