Succulent- Crassula Ovata Variegata

Evergreen succulent • Low water • Bright light

A striking variegated form of the classic jade plant, prized for its creamy white and apple-green leaves edged pink in strong light. Easy, drought-tolerant, and long-lived indoors or out in frost-free climates.

Description

Crassula ovata ‘Variegata’ (Variegated Jade Plant) is a compact, woody-stemmed succulent shrub with thick, glossy, oval leaves marbled cream and green. In bright, cool conditions the leaf margins blush rosy pink, adding year-round color and texture. Mature plants produce airy clusters of starry white to pale pink flowers in late fall to winter.

Durable and forgiving, this cultivar thrives in bright windows and on sunny patios. Its neat branching habit responds well to pruning, making it a favorite for bonsai styling and architectural containers. Provide sharp drainage, infrequent deep watering, and abundant light for best variegation and compact growth.

  • Bright indoor houseplant
  • Sunroom / office accent
  • Patio or balcony containers

Care Tips

Planting instructions icon
Planting Instructions Use a pot with drainage. Set the plant at the same depth; do not bury the stem. After repotting, wait 3–5 days before first watering to allow any wounds to callus.
Soil moisture icon
Soil Moisture Water deeply, then let soil dry 75–100% before watering again. Reduce frequency in winter; never leave standing water in saucers.
Soil type icon
Soil Type Fast-draining cactus/succulent mix amended with 20–40% pumice or perlite; pH near neutral (6.0–7.0).
Humidity icon
Humidity Prefers low to moderate humidity (30–50%) with good airflow; avoid overly damp rooms.
Pruning icon
Pruning Instructions Prune in spring after bloom. Pinch tips to encourage branching; remove leggy or crossing stems. Propagate cuttings after drying 3–7 days.
Winter care icon
Winter Care Keep above 50°F (10°C); brightest possible light. Water sparingly and protect from frost and cold drafts to avoid leaf drop.
Planting depth icon
Planting Depth Crown at soil line. For stem cuttings, insert 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) deep into dry, gritty mix after the cut end has callused.
Fertilization icon
Fertilization Light feeder. In spring–summer, apply a balanced or low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer at 1/4–1/2 strength monthly. Do not fertilize in winter.
Special care icon
Special Care Rotate pot every few weeks for even growth; acclimate gradually to full sun; avoid overpotting. Watch for mealybugs/scale and treat promptly with alcohol swabs or insecticidal soap.
Tip: Cooler nights and bright days in late fall, coupled with slightly drier soil, can encourage winter flowering.
