Description

Kalanchoe marmorata, commonly called Spotted Kalanchoe or Penwiper Plant, is a distinctive evergreen succulent from Central/East Africa. Its broad, paddle-like, blue‑green leaves are dramatically patterned with maroon‑purple spots that intensify with strong light. Plants form upright, sparsely branched clumps and, in late winter to spring, send up tall stems topped with clusters of starry white blossoms. Hardy only in frost‑free climates but exceptionally well suited to bright interiors and containers, it delivers bold, modern texture with very modest care.

Tip: Strong light enhances the purple spotting on the leaves. Indoors, a sunny south or west window is ideal.

Care Tips

  • Planting instructions iconPlanting InstructionsUse a pot with drainage. Set the root ball level with the soil surface; do not bury leaves. Backfill with gritty mix and tap to settle—do not compact. Outdoors, plant in raised beds or mounds for rapid runoff.
  • Soil moisture iconSoil MoistureWater deeply, then allow 2/3 of the mix to dry before watering again. Typical indoor schedule: every 2–3 weeks in spring/summer; monthly or less in winter. Always adjust to light, temperature, and pot size.
  • Soil type iconSoil TypeFast‑draining cactus/succulent mix amended with 50–70% mineral grit (pumice, perlite, coarse sand). pH slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.5).
  • Humidity iconHumidityLow to average household humidity (30–50%). Provide good airflow; avoid persistently humid, stagnant spaces.
  • Pruning iconPruning InstructionsAfter bloom, cut flower stalks at the base. Remove damaged or leggy stems in spring to shape. Sterilize tools; allow cut surfaces to dry before watering again.
  • Winter care iconWinter CareProtect from frost; keep above 50°F/10°C (ideal 55–65°F/13–18°C). Provide maximum light and water sparingly. Do not leave in cold, wet soil.
  • Planting depth iconPlanting DepthPlant so the crown sits at soil level; keep leaf bases above the mix to prevent rot. Leave a slight lip at the rim for clean watering.
  • Fertilization iconFertilizationLight feeder: apply a diluted (1/4–1/2 strength) balanced or low‑nitrogen succulent fertilizer monthly in spring/summer. Withhold feeding in winter; flush salts periodically.
  • Special care iconSpecial CareRotate pot monthly for even growth. Watch for mealybugs and scale; treat early. Propagate from leaf or stem cuttings—allow to callus 2–5 days before planting in dry mix. Avoid water sitting on leaves in cold weather.
  • Light requirements icon
Light Tuning To intensify spotting, increase light gradually over 10–14 days. Provide light shade during extreme afternoon heat to prevent leaf scorch.

Signs of overwatering: soft, translucent leaves; blackened stems; soil stays wet >5–7 days. Correct by improving drainage and increasing dry time between waterings.
