A collector-worthy Aeonium with sculptural rosettes and dramatic, cool-season color.
Rare cultivar
Container standout
Low water
USDA 9–11
Description
Aeonium ‘Valor’ is a rare, architectural succulent prized for its symmetrical rosettes and dramatic, cool-season coloration. Expect firm, spoon-shaped leaves that deepen to rich burgundy and mahogany tones in bright, cool conditions, often with a contrasting green center. Plants form branching heads with age, creating a compact, multi-rosette silhouette that shines in containers, rock gardens, and coastal plantings. Like most Aeoniums, ‘Valor’ grows most actively from fall through spring and slows or rests in high summer heat. Provide excellent drainage, bright light, and protection from hard frost for best performance.

Care Tips
-
Planting InstructionsPlant at the same depth as in its pot; mound slightly above the surrounding soil for drainage. Space 10–18 in apart to allow branching rosettes.
-
Soil MoistureIn active growth (fall–spring), water when the top 2/3 of the mix is dry. In summer heat, water sparingly—just enough to prevent shriveling. Always drain thoroughly.
-
Soil TypeFast-draining cactus/succulent mix amended with 30–50% mineral grit (pumice, perlite, or coarse sand); pH near neutral (6.0–7.0).
-
HumidityPrefers low to average humidity with good air movement; avoid misting or trapping moisture in the rosette.
-
Pruning InstructionsRemove spent flower stalks and dried lower leaves. Pinch or tip-prune lightly in spring to encourage branching. Sterilize tools before cuts.
-
Winter CareProtect from frost; move containers under cover if temperatures dip below ~35°F (1.5°C). Keep on the drier side and provide the brightest possible light.
-
Planting DepthSet the crown just above the soil line; do not bury the rosette. Top-dress with gravel to keep leaves off wet soil.
-
FertilizationFeed lightly in fall through spring with a diluted, low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer (about 1/4 strength monthly). Hold fertilizer in summer dormancy.
-
Special CareRotate pots monthly for even color and symmetry. Provide afternoon shade in hot interiors. Check for mealybugs. Avoid overhead watering. Propagate from tip cuttings after allowing a 3–7 day callus.
Note: Aeoniums often slow growth in summer heat and resume strongly in cool, bright conditions.
