Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant)

Also known as Zanzibar Gem; sometimes sold as “Zamioculcas zamifolia” in trade

Low to bright indirect light Drought-tolerant rhizomes Excellent indoor plant Pet caution

Description

The ZZ Plant is a tough, architectural aroid from East Africa prized for its glossy, deep-green, pinnate leaves and remarkable resilience. Thick underground rhizomes store water, allowing the plant to shrug off missed waterings and tolerate low light better than most houseplants. Slow-growing and tidy, it excels in modern interiors, offices, and low-maintenance spaces while adding a refined, sculptural presence year‑round.
Typical mature indoor size: 2–4 ft tall, 2–3 ft wide; larger with age and bright, indirect light.

Care Tips

  • Planting instructions iconPlanting InstructionsUse a pot with ample drainage. Position rhizomes at or just below the soil surface and avoid burying them deeply. Choose a snug container to prevent waterlogged soil.
  • Soil moisture iconSoil MoistureAllow the top 50–70% of the mix to dry before watering. Water thoroughly, then drain. Reduce frequency in winter; err on the dry side to prevent rot.
  • Soil type iconSoil TypeFast‑draining mix: 2 parts high‑quality potting soil + 1 part perlite/pumice + 1 part orchid bark or coarse sand.
  • Humidity iconHumidityAverage home humidity (30–50%) is fine. Avoid cold drafts; occasional leaf‑wiping helps keep foliage glossy.
  • Pruning instructions iconPruning InstructionsTrim yellowing or damaged stems at the base with clean shears. Rotate the pot periodically for even growth; divide rhizomes to propagate when repotting.
  • Winter care iconWinter CareKeep above 60°F (16°C). Provide bright, indirect light and reduce watering. Do not fertilize in low light/cool conditions.
  • Planting depth iconPlanting DepthCrown at soil surface; rhizomes covered by no more than 0–1 in (0–2.5 cm) of mix to discourage rot.
  • Fertilization iconFertilizationLight feeder. Apply a balanced, diluted (¼–½ strength) liquid fertilizer monthly in spring–summer or use a mild slow‑release in spring.
  • Special care iconSpecial CareWear gloves if sensitive to sap. Repot every 2–3 years when rootbound. Check occasionally for scale or mealybugs. Provide brighter indirect light to encourage fuller, faster growth.
