Sempervivum- Chick Charms Powdered Pastry

Description

A cold-hardy hens-and-chicks selection forming tight, succulent rosettes dusted with a soft, powdery sheen. Color shifts with the seasons—pastel green to silvery tones with pink blush in cooler weather. Offsets freely to form a tidy, low mound; mature rosettes are monocarpic and may send up starry blooms in summer.

Suggested Uses

Perfect for rock gardens, troughs, containers, green roofs, crevice and gravel gardens, edging, and xeriscapes. Excellent where sharp drainage and full sun highlight its seasonal color.

Plant Details

  • Botanical Name: Sempervivum (Chick Charms series) ‘Powdered Pastry’
  • Common Name: Hens and Chicks; Chick Charms ‘Powdered Pastry’
  • Size & Growth: Rosettes 3–5 in wide and 2–4 in tall; clumps to 8–12 in wide over time via offsets
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA 3–8
  • Foliage Type: Evergreen succulent rosettes; glaucous leaves with a powder-dusted look and cool-season pink blush
  • Bloom Time: Summer; mature rosettes may flower once (monocarpic) with starry blooms on short stalks
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; spreads by offsets (“chicks”)
  • Light Requirements: Full sun to light shade; best color with 6+ hours of sun (provide afternoon shade in very hot climates)
  • Attracts Pollinators: Yes—summer flowers attract bees and beneficial insects
  • Indoor Friendly: Best outdoors; can be kept short-term on the brightest windowsill with excellent airflow
  • Container Friendly: Excellent for pots, bowls, troughs, and vertical planters with sharp drainage
  • Deer Resistant: Yes; generally deer and rabbit resistant
  • Pet Warning: Non-toxic to cats and dogs; avoid overwatering to prevent rot
  • Fragrant: No—flowers are not notably fragrant
  • Cut Flower: Not typical; rosettes are better used in living wreaths and succulent crafts
  • Grows Well With: Hardy Sedum (stonecrop), Delosperma (ice plant), Thyme, Armeria (sea thrift), Dianthus

Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions: Plant with the crown at or slightly above soil level; space 6–8 in apart. Use a gritty mix and top-dress with gravel to keep leaves dry at the base.
  • Soil Moisture: Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry between waterings. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Soil Type: Sharply drained, sandy or rocky soil; neutral to slightly alkaline is ideal. Excellent drainage is essential, especially in winter.
  • Humidity: Prefers low humidity with good air circulation; keep foliage dry to prevent rot.
  • Pruning Instructions: Remove spent flower stalks and any dead rosettes. Thin or divide offsets to maintain shape and vigor.
  • Winter Care: Fully hardy when drained well. Protect container plants from prolonged winter wet; raise pots and avoid saucers holding water.
  • Planting Depth: Set shallowly so the base of the rosette rests on the soil surface; do not bury leaves.
  • Fertilization: Minimal feeding—apply a very light dose of low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer in spring if desired. Overfeeding reduces color and tight form.
  • Special Care: Propagate by removing “chicks” in spring/summer and replanting. Rotate containers for even sun; avoid standing water at any time of year.
