Care Tips

  • Planting Instructions: Plant in spring or fall with the crown at soil level; space 24–36 in apart; water in thoroughly; ensure excellent drainage
  • Soil Moisture: Keep evenly moist the first season; once established, water when the top inch of soil dries; avoid waterlogging
  • Soil Type: Free-draining sandy or loamy soils; neutral to slightly acidic; avoid heavy clay unless in raised beds
  • Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity and good air flow; dislikes hot, stagnant conditions
  • Pruning Instructions: Lightly tip-prune after flowering to keep shape and encourage new shoots; avoid hard cuts into old wood; deadhead spent spikes
  • Winter Care: Provide sharp drainage and a 2–3 in mulch (kept off stems); shelter from freezing winds; in colder zones, grow in containers and move to a bright, frost-free spot
  • Planting Depth: Set at the same depth as in the nursery pot; do not bury the crown
  • Fertilization: Light feeder; in spring apply a small amount of balanced slow-release fertilizer or compost; avoid high-nitrogen formulas
  • Special Care: Excellent drainage is key; avoid overwatering; monitor for aphids and spider mites; renew older plants every 5–7 years if they become leggy
